Enrichment: Academic Review Day Preparation

Morning Students

Today in Enrichment you will be preparing for Academic Review Day that takes place on Sunday.

On Sunday, you will arrange a ten minute interview with your tutor. Parents are invited to this meeting and they have already been sent a letter advising them of the arrangements.

The purpose of the meeting is to review your progress, achievements and success in your first year at the Senior School. You will also set three targets that you will record in your homework diary next year and will form part of Enrichment sessions where we will review what you have done to acheive your targets.

In preparation for your Academic Review Day meeting, please complete this Google Form that is designed to get you thinking about what you have achieved both inside and outside of the classroom.

You are asked to set two targets on this form that you can take along to your meeting next Sunday. One other target will be set with your tutor and that might be about behaviour, attitude, homework or another aspect of your school performance. Click here to access the form.

Dearest, most splendid students,

Thank you so much for solving the cryptic clue. I was indeed hiding out at Stonehenge. Because of your quick thinking, I was able to slip away from Lord Snatchly and depart via Bristol Airport.

I am heading to Anchorage as we speak. Tomorrow we shall meet for the very first time. Please bring some extra warm clothing to the lesson: coats, hats, scarves, gloves, a thick coat, ear muffs - whatever you have! You will need it as we venture out into the Artic Tundra in search of the Egg of Mantumbi.

You will also need your iPad as you will be writing a recount of your dangerous journey as part of our adventure.

I cannot tell you how excited I am to meet you all at last.

The Dilemma

In today's lesson students were challenged to hold an effective group discussion. As part of our ongoing 'dangerous journey', the group are now in Alaska as they hunt for the Egg of Mantumbi, but their leader, Dr Odwood, has not arrived.

They face a dilemma: should they stay or should they go?

After agreeing upon the rules and structure of a meeting, the meeting commenced.

Max was elected chair of the meeting and did an exceptional job in keeping the discussion flowing and ensuring everyone had a say.

Dangerous Journey to the Arctic

Here is our planning Padlet for our very dangerous Arctic journey.

You may need to refer to this when containing your informative writing practice in class next lesson.

We depart on Thursday. My advice to you is to wear very thick socks and don't forget to bring gloves!

Dr Odwood is in trouble! HELP!

Dear Y8 Travelling Companions

Disaster has struck! My wretched enemy, the dastardly explorer and thief Lord Pingerton Snatchly has found out my whereabouts. The Devil intends to track me and find out my destination. I think he knows that I am on the hunt for the much coveted ancient artifact the Egg of Mantumbi - this is the journey I was hoping you would accompany me on, to recover the prized golden egg. But I am not Playing around with him, he has lots of ground to cover before he can get me.

So I am hiding out. I cannot reveal my location in writing as Lord Snatchly will find me and follow me, but I know from your teacher that you are phenomenally clever students. So I have drafted this sketch that you must de-code to work out my location.

Once you have worked out where I am, email me and I will give you the next task whilst I try and escape from this hell hole.

You have 15 minutes. Use your devices, the internet and the clues in the picture (and email) to work out where I am.

And the answer was.....

Were the class successful.....

Unlucky guys. This task was designed to get you working together as a class under pressure. You worked very well but a small number of people actually said the right answer but because not all of you were listening you pursued other (incorrect) lines of inquiry. All the clues pointed to the right answer but you got sidetracked on minor issues such as the symbols around the edge of the picture.

We will try another one of these critical thinking/team work puzzles next week. Let's hope you fare better next time!
